Headings (h1–h3), unordered lists, bold, italic, inline code and links — the constructs that cover most README sections, comments and docs snippets. Tables, images and fenced code blocks are not transformed.
No — it is escaped into visible text. That is deliberate: the output can be pasted into any CMS or comment system without risking broken markup or script injection.
The reverse direction needs a parser (libraries like turndown in JavaScript or markdownify in Python do it well). For short snippets it is usually faster to rewrite by hand.
